The Basics of Play Therapy

This is an introductory training for mental health professionals who are new to play therapy.  An overview of
the history, benefits and directive vs. nondirective theories of play therapy will be discussed.  Participants will experience directive play activities that they can use with individual, group and family settings.  We will also review the credentialing process for becoming a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) or Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S) as granted by the Association for Play Therapy (APT).
Learning Objectives:
1.  Participants will understand the benefits and therapeutic value underlying the use of play therapy.
2.  Participants will have a general understanding of the history of play therapy and the differences between directive and nondirective play therapy.
3.  Participants will be knowledgeable of the APT play therapist credentialing process.
4.  Participants will be knowledgeable of where to access additional play therapy resources and trainings.

Toys in Play Therapy

Everyone knows play therapy involves toys, but how do you decide which ones to include in your playroom?  This training will discuss criteria for the selection of toys as well as cultural considerations to keep in mind.  For play therapists who do not have a set playroom and are “on the go,” we will discuss the best toys and travel items for a mobile play therapy kit.  Finally, we will discuss where to shop for toys of different price ranges as well as unique toys for your collection.

Learning Objectives:
1.  Participants will understand the criteria for selecting toys and the different categories of toys in the play room.
2.  Participants will be knowledgeable of cultural considerations to keep in mind when selecting toys.
3.  Participants will know what toys are most useful in a portable play therapy kit.
4.  Participants will have resources to find and purchase toys of different prices and qualities.

Letting the Child Lead: Child-Centered Play Therapy

This training will provide an overview of the theory, values and techniques needed to facilitate child-centered play therapy.  It will allow participants to practice new skills that are learned as well as observe videos of child-centered play therapy.

Learning Objectives:
1.  Participants will understand the theory and therapeutic value underlying child-centered play therapy.
2.  Participants will understand the essential elements necessary for developing and maintaining an effective child-therapist relationship.
3.  Participants will understand child-centered therapeutic responses.
4.  Participants will have the opportunity to observe and participate in role-playing  child-centered play therapy techniques.

Sandtray Play Therapy

This experiential training will provide an overview of the history, set-up and process of sandtray play therapy.  It will allow participants to learn about directive and non-directive uses for sandtray in play therapy sessions.  Directive sandtray ideas related to specific client concerns and populations will also be addressed.

Learning Objectives:
1.  Participants will understand the theory and therapeutic value underlying sandtray play therapy.
2.  Participants will understand the essential elements necessary for facilitating a sandtray.
3.  Participants will understand the processing and set-up of non-directive sandtrays in play therapy sessions.
4.  Participants will understand how to facilitate a directive sandtray in a play therapy session with a variety of client issues and populations.
5.  Participants will increase their hands-on experience by completing sandtrays both individually and in a group setting in the training.
